Stylish, Silent, and Scientifically Backed
Light pollution is one of those problems people often underestimate, until it starts affecting sleep, focus and overall comfort. In towns like Leatherhead, where street lighting, passing traffic and early summer sun all play a role, managing unwanted light becomes essential rather than optional. For homeowners and businesses looking for Blackout Blinds in Leatherhead, Controlux designs and installs bespoke Velux solutions that deliver genuine darkness without compromising on style.
With more than 35 years of experience supplying and fitting blinds across Leatherhead, Surrey and the wider Home Counties, Controlux brings practical knowledge rather than theory. We’ve seen first-hand how much difference proper blackout blinds can make, not just in bedrooms, but across entire homes and workplaces. Our focus is always on long-term comfort, not quick fixes.
According to the Sleep Foundation, even dim ambient light (as little as 5 lux – roughly equivalent to a night light) can suppress melatonin production, delay sleep onset, and reduce REM sleep. This can lead to fatigue, impaired memory, and weakened immunity.
Local data shows that in urban and suburban areas like Leatherhead, average night-time light exposure levels can range from 10–50 lux indoors, largely from street lighting, electronic devices, and passing cars, making light-proofing your bedroom not just a luxury, but a necessity.
Blackout blinds are designed to deal with these conditions properly. Unlike standard curtains or dim-out fabrics, true blackout systems block external light at the window itself. This helps regulate sleep patterns, improves privacy and creates a more controlled indoor environment. For families, shift workers or anyone sensitive to light, that control can be life changing, even if it sounds dramatic. Blackout blinds don’t just make your room darker: they contribute directly to better mental health, physical recovery, and even emotional regulation.
At Controlux, blackout blinds are designed to deliver multiple benefits, not just a darker room:
Naturally Sleep Better – Complete darkness encourages melatonin release, the hormone that regulates your body clock. Ideal for shift workers, children, or anyone struggling with insomnia.
Save on your Energy Bills – Blackout fabrics help insulate windows. In summer, they reduce solar heat gain; in winter, they retain warmth, cutting down on heating and cooling costs by up to 15% annually, depending on usage.
Block Out More Than Just Light – The denser materials in our blinds also help dampen outside noise. Expect reduced disturbance from neighbours, traffic, or construction, especially in high-density areas of Leatherhead.
Protect Your Interiors – UV rays can fade wooden floors, carpets, artwork, and upholstery. Blackout blinds filter up to 99% of UV exposure, helping preserve your interior furnishings longer.
Total Privacy, Day and Night – Whether you’re facing a busy street or have nosey neighbours, our blackout blinds provide complete visual security without compromising on style.
It’s a combination of these factors that makes blackout blinds a smart long-term investment rather than a luxury add-on.
While bedrooms are the most common application, blackout blinds are increasingly being used throughout the home and in commercial settings:
Home cinemas: Get the full immersive experience with lightproof viewing.
Nurseries and children’s rooms: Support healthy sleep routines for growing minds.
Home offices: Reduce screen glare and stay focused longer.
Commercial spaces: Improve client privacy and meeting room performance.
Clinics & wellness centres: Enhance comfort and confidentiality for clients.
Once people experience proper blackout performance in one room, they often add it elsewhere later on.
We tailor each installation to your room size, lighting needs, and design aesthetic:
Roller Blackout Blinds: Clean, modern, and minimalist. Perfect for bedrooms, offices, and living rooms.
Cassette Blackout Blinds: Engineered for maximum light seal. Ideal for media rooms, shift workers, or very bright locations.
Vertical Blackout Blinds: Best suited for wide windows, bifold doors, or glass walls. Offers precision light control.
Motorised Blackout Blinds: Upgrade your space with app or remote-controlled blinds. Set schedules, reduce energy use, and increase convenience; especially for hard-to-reach windows or luxury settings.
We look at window orientation, room use and light levels before recommending a system, not after.
