At Controlux, we supply and install a wide range of Shutters in Twickenham and surrounding areas of South London to suit all homeowners and their unique styles.
From period terraces near the green to larger family houses tucked behind quiet streets, homes in Twickenham have a strong sense of character. Window treatments need to respect that. Shutters Twickenham homeowners choose are rarely about trends, they’re about long-term comfort, proportion and practicality.
At Controlux Blinds, we design and install made-to-measure
shutters across Twickenham and surrounding areas. With more than 35 years working in South West London, we understand how local architecture, light levels and privacy concerns change from street to street. Shutters aren’t just a decorative add-on, they become part of how the house works every single day.
Twickenham has a wide range of housing styles. Victorian and Edwardian homes with tall windows, 1930s semis, and newer developments closer to the river all bring different challenges. Shutters manage to adapt to all of them, when they’re specified properly. Homeowners in Twickenham often choose shutters for a few key reasons:
Controlled natural light: Louvres allow fine adjustment throughout the day. You’re not stuck with open or closed like you are with many blinds.
Privacy without dark rooms: Particularly useful on ground floors or homes close to footpaths. You can block views in while still letting daylight filter through.
Thermal comfort: Solid wood and composite shutters add an extra barrier at the window, reducing draughts in winter and helping rooms feel calmer during summer heat.
Low maintenance: No fabrics means no dust traps. A wipe down now and then is usually enough, which suits busy households.
Long-term value: Shutters are often viewed as a fitted feature. Many Twickenham estate agents see them as a positive when it comes to resale.
Noise softening: They won’t soundproof a room, but thicker shutter panels can noticeably reduce external noise, especially on busier roads.
Research carried out by English Heritage in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University found that internal shutters can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 62%. That’s especially relevant in older Twickenham properties where original windows are kept for character or planning reasons.
Even in homes with modern glazing, shutters help stabilise temperature. Rooms are less affected by sudden cold snaps or strong afternoon sun. Over time, that can reduce heating and cooling demand, even if it’s not instantly obvious on bills.
Shutters also help limit UV exposure. This protects timber floors, furniture and artwork from fading, which is a real issue in south-facing rooms.
A shutter that works beautifully in one house can look completely wrong in another. Twickenham’s architecture demands a tailored approach. At Controlux, we design shutters to suit the building, not the other way round:
This attention to proportion and detail is what stops shutters looking heavy or out of place.
We offer a wide selection of bespoke shutters to suit every room and style:
Full Height Shutters: Classic and elegant, these cover the entire window and are ideal for bedrooms and living rooms. Add a mid-rail for flexible light control.
Tier-on-Tier Shutters: Two independently operated panels, top and bottom. Perfect for urban-facing windows needing privacy below and light above.
Café Style Shutters: Cover only the lower half of the window; a great option for ground-floor spaces in Kingston town centre or East Sheen.
Solid Panel Shutters: Traditional, full-coverage panels for maximum privacy and thermal insulation, ideal for period homes or bedrooms.
Tracked Shutters: Mounted on a sliding track system for bi-fold doors or wide window expanses. Popular in open-plan kitchen extensions.
Special Shape Shutters: Made to fit arches, circles, and gables, particularly useful for converted lofts and architectural features found in Kingston’s heritage buildings.
Our shutters are available in:
Hardwood: Lightweight and luxurious, ideal for wide windows or detailed finishes.
MDF/Composite: Durable, cost-effective, and ideal for high-humidity areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Waterproof ABS: Fully moisture-resistant for bathrooms, wet rooms, and pool houses.
Custom Finishes: Choose from a vast range of colours, stains, or colour-match to Farrow & Ball, Dulux, or Little Greene palettes.
